Mizithres, Keri caves and Marathonisi
Southern Zakynthos feels different from Navagio: the twin Mizithres rocks, the caves at Keri, and Marathonisi, the small island linked with loggerhead turtles.
Mizithres at Keri
Mizithres are two large limestone rocks standing off the coast at Keri, on the southwest of Zakynthos. From the sea they read as a gate. The water around them is deep and clear, and the cliffs behind them continue the same white line.
We visit them on a private cruise, on the Southern Wonders plan, because the south coast needs time and does not fit the shared Navagio route.
Caves at Keri
Along the same southern shore, caves and arches open where the boat can pass close when the swell allows. These are not the Blue Caves of Cape Skinari. They are another chapter of Zakynthos, quieter and wilder.
The skipper decides which openings are safe that day. The view is not worth a tight entrance in a rough sea.
Marathonisi, turtle island
Marathonisi is a small island in Laganas Bay. Its beach and the shallows around it belong to the habitat where Caretta caretta nests. We approach with restraint: we do not chase turtles, we do not step on nests, we do not anchor on seagrass.
On a private cruise the stop is to see the island and, if conditions allow, to swim where it does not disturb the animals. Watching is done from a distance.
How to book the southern route
Ask for Southern Wonders as a private cruise: Mizithres, Keri, Marathonisi, secluded swims. Departure is still Makris Gialos in Volimes, so the run down to the south of the island sits inside the hours you book.
If you only want the northern sights, Navagio and the Blue Caves are closer to Makris Gialos. The southern day is its own trip, not a half-hour add-on.
